Job Application Guide: Navigating USAJOBS for ATC Careers

How Does the USAJOBS Application Process Work?

Step 1: Create a login.gov Account

Before you can apply for federal jobs on USAJOBS, you need to create a free account at login.gov. This gives you secure access to USAJOBS and other government websites.

Step 2: Set Up Your USAJOBS Profile

After creating your login.gov account, go to USAJOBS.gov and make your profile. This profile helps you apply for jobs, save listings, store your resume, and upload documents. It also helps USAJOBS recommend better job matches for you.

Step 3: Search for Jobs

Use keywords or choose a location to search for jobs on USAJOBS. You can also filter by salary, schedule, agency, and more. You don’t need a profile to search, but if you're signed in, your search results may be more helpful.

Step 4: Save Job Searches

You can save your job searches so USAJOBS will do the work for you. It can email you new job listings every day, week, or month—whichever you prefer.

Step 5: Read Job Announcements Carefully

Before you apply, read the full job announcement. Look at the sections called “This job is open to” and “Who may apply” to see if you’re eligible. Make sure you meet the qualifications. This helps you know if the job is a good fit.

Step 6: Apply for the Job

Follow the “How to Apply” section in the job post. The application usually has five steps. You’ll upload your resume and other documents, and you may have to answer some extra questions. Be sure to follow all instructions.

Step 7: Application Review by the Agency

After you apply, the agency will review your application. They’ll decide if you are “minimally qualified” or “highly qualified.” The top applicants are sent to the hiring manager for review.

Step 8: Interviews

If you’re selected, the agency will contact you for an interview. This may be done by phone, video, or in person. There might be more than one round of interviews, depending on the job.

Step 9: Job Offer

If you're chosen, the agency will give you a tentative (temporary) job offer. You’ll need to pass a background check or security clearance. After that, the offer becomes official, and the agency will work with you to set a start date.
